POSITION
STATEMENT TEACHER EVALUATION PROCESS The
complex nature of teaching is fully acknowledged. Teaching is a profession that
encompasses far more than simply sharing knowledge through a classroom presentation.
Teaching is viewed as having both scientific and artistic facets. A body of scientific
knowledge exists concerning how people learn. A companion body of scientific knowledge
exists concerning effective and efficient instructional techniques. The scientific
facet of teaching is seen in the depth and breadth of a teacher's knowledge of
effective instructional techniques. The artistic facet of teaching is seen in
the skillful application of the teacher's knowledge of instructional techniques
and the quality of instructional decisions made by the teacher. Teaching
involves human interaction. It cannot, and should not, be reduced to a statistical
activity. The evaluation of a teacher's performance does, and should, involve
human judgment. Judgment, even when exercised by competent professionals, may
involve some degree of subjectivity. This is natural and appropriate. It is our
intent to reduce to the greatest degree possible, the arbitrary nature of evaluation
judgments.
