A mission statement must define the purpose of the organization – the reason for the organization’s existence.

Example:
Our school district is devoted to exemplary instruction and high levels of student achievement. Our mission is to prepare our students to be productive citizens of the world.

The mission statement evolves from on going dialogue. It may change several times through the process. In fact, it may be the last item that is finalized.
